Liver Cancer

Symptoms and Signs of Liver Cancer

Because symptoms of liver cancer generally do not appear in the disease’s early stages, many patients are not diagnosed until the disease is advanced and more difficult to cure. Symptoms of liver cancer can include: loss of weight and appetite; abdominal pain, especially in the upper right part of the abdomen; nausea and vomiting; general weakness and fatigue; and enlarged liver and abdominal swelling; and jaundice. Potential complications of liver cancer include liver failure, or when the liver is losing or has lost all of its function; kidney failure, or when the kidneys lose their ability to filter fluids and waste; and metastasis, meaning the cancer has spread to organs beyond the liver—most commonly, in the case of primary liver cancer, the lungs and bones.
