When the larynx or voice box becomes diseased, cancerous or injured, patients may need laryngeal surgery (laryngectomy) to remove the problematic tissue. Oftentimes, this means surgical removal of all or part of the voice box, lymph nodes or surrounding tissue. This major surgical procedure is performed in a hospital under general anesthesia.

During laryngeal surgery, an incision is made in the neck to access the larynx. All or parts of the voice box, surrounding tissue, pharynx and/or lymph nodes are removed if necessary. The surgeon than attaches the trachea (wind pipe) to a hole in the front of the neck. The patient will use this hole, called a stoma, to breathe for the rest of his or her life. In some procedures, a small prosthesis is placed into the trachea and esophagus to allow the patient to speak without the voice box.

This invasive layrngeal surgery can cause serious side effects. Florida Hospital offers other less invasive procedures to reduce side effects and recovery time for qualified patients. These are some of the less invasive procedures:

  • Endoscopic Laryngeal surgery (transoral resection)
  • Vertical partial layrngectomy
  • Supraglottic/horizontal partial layrngectomy
  • Supracricoid partial laryngectomy

Each procedure is dedicated to treating patient’s exact needs. The best way to determine if you are a candidate for these minimally invasive procedures is to speak to a doctor at Florida Hospital. Request your appointment online today.
