Intensity-modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT)

Treatments Related to Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy

Depending on the type, severity and location of the cancer, related treatments to intensity-modulated radiation therapy may be recommended instead of IMRT. Different procedures have different strengths.
There are two types of radiation therapy: internal and external beam radiation. For patients who need internal treatment, IMRT cannot be used. For patients receiving external beam radiation, IMRT may be recommended instead of these related treatments depending on the goals of treatment.
These are some of the external-beam related treatments to IMRT:
  • 3-dimensional conformal radiation therapy (3D-CRT)
  • Image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT)
  • Tomotherapy
  • Stereotactic radiosurgery
  • Stereotactic body radiation therapy
  • Proton therapy
Besides other external radiation procedures, other related treatments for cancer may be incorporated into the treatment plan or used in place of IMRT. These are some of the other treatment options:
  • Chemotherapy
  • Surgery
  • Targeted therapy
