What Is An Inguinal Hernia?

A hernia occurs when a portion of the intestines protrudes through a weak spot in the wall of the abdomen. Inguinal hernias develop in the groin. Instead of pushing through the abdominal wall, they push through a weak spot/tear in the inguinal canal floor, a triangular area near the groin that is found between abdominal muscle layers.

Inguinal hernias can be painful and will not go away on their own if ignored. In most cases, they get bigger. Untreated hernias are at a greater risk of worsening by relatively common actions, such as heavy lifting or straining during a bowel movement.
