Hypopharyngeal Cancer

Treating Hypopharyngeal Cancer

Depending on the stage of the cancer diagnosis and the patient’s health, treating hypopharyngeal cancer is different for each patient. Doctors may recommend different techniques to be most effective without causing permanent side effects that affect breathing, eating and swallowing.

Doctors at Florida Hospital work with patients to determine the best treatment plan. Plans may include more than one treatment for hypopharyngeal cancer to improve effectiveness and prevent recurrence. These are some of the therapies that may be recommended:
  • Surgery to remove the tumor and may include these other types of surgery:
o Laryngopharyngectomy (removal of the larynx or voice box), partial laryngopharyngectomy
o Neck dissection (removal of the lymph nodes)
  • Radiation therapy
  • Chemotherapy
