While researchers work to discover the causes of hypopharyngeal cancer, doctors encourage patients to make healthy lifestyle choices that decrease the risk of developing cancer. These are some of the risk factors for hypopharyngeal cancer:
- Using chewing tobacco
- Consuming alcohol heavily
- Eating a diet without enough fruits and vegetables
- Plummer-Vinson syndrome
While these risk factors do not indicate a patient will definitely develop cancer, they will increase the risk. It’s also important to note that even patients with low risk of developing hypopharyngeal cancer can be diagnosed.
