Causes of Hypoglycemia

Most of the common causes of hypoglycemia are related to diabetes. Patients should monitor their diabetes closely to avoid medical complications like hypoglycemia. These are some of the causes of abnormally low blood sugar:
  • Taking too much insulin/diabetes medication, especially without food
  • Missing a meal
  • Delaying a meal
  • Taking too much or the wrong kind of medication
As a diabetes complication, hypoglycemia can occur when patients mismanage their condition, but it if happens often even with good management, speak to a doctor to determine if your care plan should be altered.
Other causes of hypoglycemia are rare, but can include the following:
  • Pregnancy
  • Exercise
  • Prolonged fasting
  • Medications
  • Alcohol abuse
  • Tumors that produce insulin
