Unfortunately, there are no special steps that can be taken for the prevention of hyperemesis gravidarum. While it is thought that elevated HCG levels normal in pregnancy may lead to morning sickness and to hyperemesis gravidarum, the exact connection is not known.
Morning sickness occurs to about 80 percent of women, and a very small number – less than 2 percent – are afflicted with the very severe vomiting associated with the condition. Rather than preventing hyperemesis gravidarum, in less extreme cases, a woman may be able to minimize the effects with changes in diet and increasing fluid intake. If the condition worsens, doctors can help with medications and administering fluids intravenously.
