Treatments Related to Hormonal Contraceptives

For women who cannot or do not wish to use hormonal contraceptives, there are other options for preventing pregnancy. These include:

  • Male and female condoms (85 to 98 percent and 80 to 95 percent effective, respectively; they also provide STI protection)
  • Diaphragm and cap (80 to 94 percent effective; the diaphragm provides some STI protection, but the cap does not)
  • Sponge (84 to 91 percent effective; no STI protection)
  • Vasectomy (in males) or tubal ligation (i.e., a woman getting her “tubes tied”)
