Causes of Hernias

Babies can be born with a congenital hernia. Adults who were born with an inguinal hernia may never notice symptoms until the hernia bulges because of the strain associated with chronic constipation, coughing over a long period of time, obesity, lifting something heavy or an enlarged prostate that requires men to strain while urinating.
Incisional hernias are caused by the abdominal wall failing to heal properly after surgery, leaving an open hole in the muscle layer.
Factors contributing to the development of a hiatal hernia include excessive coughing, vomiting, strained bowel movements, pregnancy, obesity and sudden physical activity.
