Treatments for Headache

For most of us, treating a headache begins with the use of over-the-counter medications such as aspirin, ibuprofen or acetaminophen. Other treatment options may include an ice pack on the forehead, taking a warm bath, rest, relaxation techniques, regular exercise, avoiding foods that lead to headaches, limiting caffeine and nicotine intake, not skipping meals and getting an eye exam.

For migraines, prescription medications may be needed if over-the-counter medicines do not work. Patients suffering from cluster headaches may sometimes be prescribed preventative medications or injectable medications (e.g., sumatriptan) that can relieve pain quickly after it appears, and may also use 100 percent oxygen breathed in through a mask.
