What Is GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease)?

The esophagus is the long tube that connects the throat to the stomach. When stomach acid backs up (refluxes) into the esophagus, it is a condition called acid reflux.  Prolonged acid reflux leads to gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), a digestive disorder characterized by acid damage and painful inflammation of the unprotected lining of the esophagus. Over time, this inflammation and acid scarring can cause the esophagus to narrow, making it difficult to swallow.
