Why Choose Florida Hospital?

Gallstones are made of hardened cholesterol or bile that forms in the gallbladder. When one of these stones blocks the bile duct or gallbladder, it causes pain and may lead to a serious medical condition. If left untreated, gallstones can cause infections in the gallbladder, bile ducts, liver and pancreas. Formed when bile and cholesterol harden in the gallbladder, gallstones can cause blockages in the bile ducts and infections throughout the digestive system. Gallstones may stay in the gallbladder (cholelithiasis) or can travel to the bile ducts (choledocholithiasis). If the gallstones do not cause symptoms, gallstone treatment may not be necessary.

There are two types of gallstones, and each is treated differently:

  • Cholesterol Gallstones form when a patient has too much cholesterol and bilirubin, but not enough bile salts.
  • Pigment gallstones form in patients with cirrhosis, biliary tract infections and blood disorders, like sickle cell anemia. The cause of this form of gallstones is unknown.
