Side Effects of Gabapentin

Like many drugs, gabapentin does have some potential for side effects. Common side effects associated with this medication include:

  • Drowsiness, tiredness or weakness
  • Dizziness
  • Headache
  • Uncontrollable shaking of a part of the body, or unwanted eye movements
  • Double or blurred vision
  • Unsteadiness
  • Anxiety, or strange or unusual thoughts
  • Memory problems
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Diarrhea or constipation
  • Dry mouth
  • Heartburn
  • Increased appetite and/or weight gain
  • Swelling of the hands, feet, ankles or lower legs
  • Back or joint pain
  • Fever, runny nose, or other cold or flu-like symptoms
  • Ear pain
  • Red, itchy eyes

These side effects do not usually immediate medical care, though you should call your doctor if they seem severe or persistent. Gabapentin does have the potential for more serious, less common side effects as well. If you experience any of these, call your doctor right away:

  • Rash
  • Itching
  • Swelling of the face, throat, tongue, lips or eyes
  • Hoarseness
  • Seizures
  • Difficulty swallowing or breathing
