ORANGE CITY, Fla., January 28, 2014 –On January 20, 150 people registered for the inaugural Orange City Mayor’s Fitness Challenge and had their biometrics screening at the kickoff event at Florida Hospital Fish Memorial.
The evening included a welcome from Florida Hospital Fish Memorial internal medicine physician Malika George, MD, as well as a short Zumba demonstration led by Fit Club instructor Claudia Mucci, followed by a brisk walk around the hospital’s campus, led by Orange City Mayor Tom Laputka and Florida Hospital Fish Memorial CEO Ed Noseworthy.
The Orange City Mayor’s Fitness Challenge is a 10-week challenge, designed to motivate participants to improve their overall wellness. Participants receive baseline lab work and biometric screenings, courtesy of Florida Hospital Fish Memorial. At the end of the challenge, participants will have their measurements retaken to determine the percentage of body weight lost.
“I am very excited that so many people from the community have signed up for the challenge,” said Tom Laputka, Orange City mayor. “We all need to honor our commitments to our self to better our health!”
For $25, participants can join the challenge and receive access to the Four Townes YMCA for four days a week and weekly fitness activities provided by Fit Club. They will also receive discounts and free classes to other local gyms and fitness centers, as well as helpful tools such as pedometers.
The top three participants that lose the greatest percentage of body weight will receive cash prizes: first place receives $750, second place receives $500 and third place receives $250.
