Nurse Receives DAISY Award

ORANGE CITY, Fla., November 22, 2017 – Florida Hospital Fish Memorial recognized registered nurse Shirley Morgan with the DAISY award.

The DAISY Award is an international program that rewards and celebrates extraordinary clinical skill and compassionate care provided by nurses.

Morgan was nominated for this recognition by a colleague at Florida Hospital Fish Memorial.

“Shirley is an amazing nurse that often gets overlooked.  She has been a registered nurse for over 40 years and has been more than able to adapt to the changes, demands, and new technology that continues to occur with bedside nursing, all the while continuing to show patients and their families unbiased love and compassion,” the colleague wrote in a nomination form.

In the nomination, the colleague shared a story about Morgan’s impact on a patient with cancer.

“He told the nurse leaders that she showed him compassion and love that he was never given before.  Even when she was not his assigned nurse, he stated that she would often come by and check on him,” the colleague wrote. “When he was discharged, he said he wanted to continue his fight for cancer, and it was due to his conversations with Shirley. This is only one example of the many stories I could provide.  She always provides love and emotional support to all of her patients.”

Created in 1999, more than 2,500 healthcare facilities in all 50 states, as well as 15 other countries, use the DAISY Award to honor nurses.

In recognition of this honor, Morgan received a vase of daisies, an award pin, a tote bag, and a hand-carved stone sculpture of the “Healer’s Touch” by an artist of the Shona Tribe in Zimbabwe.

Her unit, Florida Hospital Fish Memorial’s progressive care unit, also received cinnamon rolls and a DAISY banner to display.
