ORANGE CITY, Fla., January 9, 2014 – Florida Hospital Fish Memorial staff, volunteers and physicians donated approximately 1,300 pounds of canned, boxed, and “non-perishable” foods to help stock the weekend food pantry at Spirit Elementary School and Discovery Elementary Schools for their students.
“At Spirit Elementary, 75 percent of the students are eligible for a free or reduced lunch, and at Discovery, that number is slightly higher at 77 percent. That equates to a lot of kids with families struggling to put food on the table. How can a child focus on solving a math problem or learning a new word when she or he is fighting hunger pains?” said Ruben Colon, respiratory therapist at Florida Hospital Fish Memorial. “Across the country, teachers have found that, sometimes, Monday morning comes and they have to compete with hunger for their students’ attention. More than 18 million children qualify for free or reduced price meals through the National School Lunch Program, which provides the fuel that they need to get them through the week. What happens to these children when they go home for the weekend?”
That’s why the hospital staff banded together to host a food drive for these two Deltona schools. The food will be available in the elementary schools’ weekend food pantry for those in need.
“Our mission to extend the healing ministry of Christ goes far beyond the walls of the facility,” said Art Bakewell, Florida Hospital Fish Memorial Director of Pastoral Care. “This type of effort speaks directly to our employees’ heart. They exemplify this spirit of compassion every day, and this is simply another evidence of that.”
