For many patients, the first screening for fibroadenoma occurs at home during a home self breast exam (SBE). Many fibroadenomas can be detected by simply performing the exam and understanding the symptoms. Once a lump in the breast is detected at home or during a routine screening, doctors may conduct a physical exam.
Doctors can usually detect fibroadenomas through breast exam screening, but then confirm the diagnosis through mammography or ultrasound. A biopsy may be required to rule out a cancerous tumor.
