Femoral Hernia

Causes of Femoral Hernia

For most patients, the causes of femoral hernia are unclear. Infants can have the hernia at birth, but it may not be discovered until later in life. This is called a congenital femoral hernia.
While what causes femoral hernias may be uncertain, these are some of the risk factors that increase the likelihood of developing a hernia:
  • Enlarged prostate that causes straining to urinate
  • Obesity
  • Chronic cough
  • Chronic constipation
  • Improper form when heavy lifting
  • Being a woman (femoral hernias occur in women more often than men)
