For most patients, the causes of femoral hernia are unclear. Infants can have the hernia at birth, but it may not be discovered until later in life. This is called a congenital femoral hernia.
While what causes femoral hernias may be uncertain, these are some of the risk factors that increase the likelihood of developing a hernia:
- Enlarged prostate that causes straining to urinate
- Chronic cough
- Chronic constipation
- Improper form when heavy lifting
- Being a woman (femoral hernias occur in women more often than men)
