Ependymal Tumor

Screening and Tests for Ependymal Tumor

Diagnosing ependymal tumors often begins with MRI scans, which can provide detailed images of the brain and spinal cord. CT scans can help determine if the patient has hydrocephalus. However, only the biopsy of a tissue sample obtained during surgery can confirm a diagnosis. A lumbar puncture (i.e., a spinal tap) may also be used to see if the tumor has spread into the cerebrospinal fluid, which it does in about 10 to 15 percent of cases.
