Side Effects of Endoscopy

Much like any procedure, there can be serious endoscopy side effects, risks and complications that can occur. In general, the endoscopy procedure is safe and most complications—if any—can be treated.

Here is a list of some of the endoscopy risks:

  • Tear in the wall of the stomach or intestine
  • Allergic reaction to the sedation medication
  • Infection from the endoscopy
  • Bleeding
  • Pancreatitis due to surgical trauma

While these risks are serious, they rarely occur and can usually be treated using antibiotics and/or IV fluids.

To prevent endoscopy complications, Florida Hospital specialists encourage patients to disclose all allergies, symptoms and medical history before the procedure. Your physician can answer any specific questions or concerns you have.
