There are several tests for eclampsia that a doctor will perform to determine if it is the cause of seizures in an expectant mother.
Breathing rate and blood pressure will be monitored. Also, blood and urine tests may be prescribed to screen for:
- excess uric acid
- protein in the urine
- blood clotting agents
- liver function
- platelet count
- creatinine in the blood to see how the kidneys function
- hematocrit measuring the number of red blood cells
- eye exam to look for retinal changes that could blur vision
If screening for eclampsia is positive, treatment must begin immediately.
