What Is Diverticulosis?

Diverticulosis is the formation of bulging sacs that protrude from the bowel wall. These sacs, called diverticula, usually form in the colon, but can also from in the intestine, stomach or esophagus. In most cases, individuals with diverticulosis never notice symptoms.

While diverticulosis is the formation of these sacs, diverticulitis is the condition in which a break in the bowel wall causes infection and inflammation in one or more diverticulum.  An estimated 10 to 20 percent of people with diverticulosis develop diverticulitis. Each of these conditions is classified as a diverticular disease.
