Dilation and Curettage

Side Effects of Dilation and Curettage

Following D and C surgery, women may experience a few side effects related to the procedure, including back pain, pelvic cramps and light vaginal bleeding for a few days
A sanitary pad helps manage bleeding, and pain relievers may help reduce cramping and soreness. Douching, tampons and sexual intercourse should be discontinued until cleared by the doctor.
The woman’s next menstrual period may begin earlier or later than usual because the uterine lining needs time to build back up.
Other possible side effects of a D and C that should be reported to the doctor immediately include:
  • Heavy bleeding
  • Foul-smelling vaginal discharge
  • Severe abdominal pain
  • Fever and/or chills
