Dilation and Curettage
Treatments Related to Dilation and Curettage
Depending on the reason for a dilation and curettage (D and C), other treatments may be recommended. If the surgery led to a diagnosis of cancer, radiation treatments, chemotherapy, or both may be used. When used to investigate infertility, the D and C may be part of a process that includes hormone therapy.
A D and C can be used in conjunction with an abortion induced by medication to remove any remaining pieces of fetal tissue and placenta before they become infected. The D and C also may be recommended when an IUD (intrauterine device) used for birth control becomes embedded.
