Developmental Delays

Causes of Developmental Delays

The causes of developmental delays vary depending on the underlying cause. In some cases, such as with Down syndrome, genetic problems are to blame; other times, such as with fetal alcohol syndrome or some cases of mental retardation, the mother’s behavior while pregnant (e.g., drinking or using drugs) may have caused the developmental delays. Severe medical problems developed soon after birth (usually linked to premature birth) may also play a role. Sometimes, the cause is unknown.
