Prevention of Dementia

A number of steps can be taken that may help in the prevention of dementia. Researchers have identified a number of factors relating to proper health and being mentally active. Doctors also hope that advances in treatments for the underlying causes of dementia can lead to ways to prevent it from occurring.

Actions that show promise of delaying or preventing dementia include:

  • Lowering homocysteine, an amino acid associated with Alzheimer’s disease and vascular dementia
  • Reducing levels of cholesterol
  • Managing blood pressure
  • Reducing weight
  • Exercise to stimulate chemicals that improve neuron function
  • Education which appears to help develop stronger nerve cell networks
  • Use of NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs)
