Community Benefit

As members of Adventist Health System, our hospitals operate as not-for-profit organizations focused on improving the health of the communities we serve. Every three years we conduct Community Health Needs Assessments to determine the major needs in our area. This data is then used to develop a Community Health Plan for each hospital to improve residents’ health through education, research, financial assistance, special clinical and non-clinical programs, and the provision of spiritual resources. These services, referred to as community benefits, are offered without regard to profit. Their sole purpose is to strengthen the well-being of the community and to aid vulnerable individuals such as the elderly and underprivileged.

For an effort to be considered a community benefit, an activity must address a need documented in the assessment and have at least one of these objectives:

  • Improve access to health care services
  • Enhance the health of the community
  • Advance medical or health care knowledge
  • Relieve or reduce the burden of government
