Colon Cancer

Preventing Colon Cancer

There are a few steps individuals can take to reduce their chances of developing colon cancer. These include:

  • Eating a high fiber diet with fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grains
  • Reducing fat intake
  • Getting an adequate amount of vitamins and minerals
  • Avoiding the consumption of moderate to heavy amounts of alcohol
  • Quitting smoking
  • Exercise and weight control
  • Taking anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen, which appear to help reduce polyp growth
  • Taking statin drugs
In addition, it is vital for adults age 50 and over to receive regular screening tests for colorectal cancer. If these cancers are caught early, they can often be cured.
