Cholecystectomy

Survivability of Cholecystectomy

For most patients, the survivability of cholecystectomy is high. Most recover from surgery quickly. Each patient’s experience can differ depending on the type of surgery, the overall health of the patient and the specific condition being treated.

For instance, patients with cancer may require further treatment to eliminate the cancerous cells. Also, patients who undergo laparoscopic cholecystectomy surgery usually recovery more quickly than patients who undergo open cholecystectomy. The majority of patients who undergo laparoscopic cholecystectomy for gallstones are discharged home the same day and may return to work in a few days. Those undergoing an open cholecystectomy may require several weeks to recover.

Ask your doctor what to expect from your surgery to ensure you’re fully aware of the risks, side effects and recovery process.
