Side Effects of Cholecystectomy

As with every surgical procedure, there are risks or side effects of cholecystectomy. It is generally considered a safe procedure, but it’s important to know as much as possible about the potential risks. Review the risks and side effects below and then speak to your doctor about what you can expect:

  • Bleeding
  • Infection at the site of the incision
  • Injury to the organs, tissue or bile duct
  • Injury to the intestines or blood vessels caused by laparoscopic instruments
  • Need to convert the minimally invasive procedure to open cholecystectomy using a large incision
  • Blood clots in the leg
  • Pneumonia (rare)
