Research and Clinical Trials for Cancer Surgery

Medical research into cancer treatments and cancer surgery has advanced considerably in recent decades, and is still ongoing. One such innovation is called natural orifice surgery—or, more specifically, Natural Orifice Translumental Endoscopic Surgery (NOTES)—which may be the next frontier of minimally invasive surgery for cancer and other ailments. It is most akin to laparoscopic surgery; however, with natural orifice surgery, even the small incisions associated with laparoscopic surgery are no longer necessary. Instead, the surgeon uses the patient’s natural orifices—i.e., the mouth, anus or vagina—as an entry point for surgical interventions in the peritoneal cavity.
