Brain Injury

Survivability of Brain Injury

The prognosis for brain injury depends on the severity of the trauma. Of the roughly 1.4 million cases of traumatic brain injury in the United States every year, about 50,000 result in death and another 90,000 have significant disability—together accounting for about 10 percent of all cases. Severe brain injuries can result in changes to a person’s thinking, sensations, language and emotion, as well as posttraumatic stress disorder; individuals with severe injuries will most likely need rehabilitation.
