Prevention of Brain Injury

While not all brain injuries can be prevented, there are some steps you can take to reduce your risk of receiving brain trauma:

  • Always wear a seatbelt in a motor vehicle, buckle children into an approved child safety seat or booster seat, and never drive after drinking or taking drugs
  • Ensure that all family members wear helmets when riding a bike, motorcycle, snowmobile or all-terrain vehicle, playing contact sports, batting or running the bases in baseball or softball, using inline skates or a skateboard, or riding a horse
  • At home, remove tripping hazards, install handrails on stairways, and install safety gates at the top and bottom of the stairs if young children are present.
