Bone Infection

Symptoms and Signs of Bone Infection

The symptoms of osteomyelitis may vary depending on the source of the infection and whether the infection has a rapid or slow onset. Generally speaking, though, common signs of bone infection include:

  • Tenderness and pain in the area of the infection
  • Bone pain
  • Swelling, redness and warmth in the affected area
  • High fever and chills
  • Difficulty moving joints in the affected area
  • Pus drainage from an open wound near a bone
  • Lethargy, irritability and fever in children

In some cases, osteomyelitis does not cause any obvious symptoms. You should see a doctor if you experience worsening bone pain along with fever, especially if you’re at risk because of a medical condition, recent surgery or injury.
