Bone Infection

Survivability of Bone Infection

Once thought to be incurable, bone infections can now be treated, usually with surgery and medications. However, there is the potential for some complications, including:

  • Bone death, which may require limb amputation to prevent the infection from spreading
  • Septic arthritis, or infection that spreads to nearby joints
  • Impaired growth in children who develop osteomyelitis in growth plates
  • Skin cancer, if the osteomyelitis has led to an open sore that is draining pus
