Heartburn is a symptom you shouldn't ignore

POSTED BY: Leslie Potter

Heartburn is a serious symptom of acid reflux.  People often think that acid reflux is not a health concern, but the truth is acid does not belong in the esophagus and when it rises and is exposed to the lining of the esophagus it can lead to serious problems including scarring of the esophagus.  Acid reflux can be caused by:
  • overeating
  • being overweight
  • eating unhealthy foods high in fat content
  • consuming alcohol
  • nicotine use
Chronic acid reflux can lead to Barrett’s esophagus and Barrett’s esophagus can lead to a certain type of esophageal cancer called adenocarcinoma, which is one of the fastest increasing cancers in the nation.  Dr. Philip Styne, medical director of the digestive health center suggests the following concerning esophageal health:
  • Avoid overeating
  • Practice a healthy diet high in fruits and vegetables
  • Eat foods that are low in fat
  • Exercise
Pam Sain knows firsthand how serious acid reflux is, her father passed away after being diagnosed with Barrett’s esophagus which then led to esophageal cancer.  Her mission is to help spread awareness throughout Central Florida on the importance of esophageal cancer.  She notes that many people are uneducated as to the symptoms of this disease, and stresses the importance of proper nutrition as well as being seen by a physician instead of self-medicating on antacids.  Join her on Sunday, April 29, 2012, at Pointe Orlando, for The Taste of Pointe Orlando Event, from 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm. All proceeds from this event will benefit the Esophageal Cancer Program at Florida Hospital Cancer Institute.
