Bladder distention is used to treat interstitial cystitis (IC), a chronic, painful inflammation of the bladder wall that can lead to scarring and stiffening of the bladder and decreased bladder capacity, in addition to chronic pain. The cause of IC is unknown, and at present there is no cure for this condition. Instead, doctors try to relieve the symptoms associated with it, including frequent urination, chronic pain, painful sexual intercourse, and feeling of pressure, pain and tenderness around the bladder, pelvis and perineum.
While stress has been know to exacerbate the symptoms of IC, it does not cause the condition. Patients with this condition seem to be especially bothered by alcoholic beverages, caffeinated beverages, some carbonated beverages, spicy foods, citrus fruits, chocolate and potassium-rich foods.
