Side Effects of Biopsy

Side effects from a biopsy depend on the location of the lesion and the type of procedure used. For example, a needle biopsy may create a small, sharp pinch where the needle is entered. Surgical biopsy for deep tumors require general anesthesia and may result in some post-surgical pain or discomfort that can be managed with medication. For endoscopic, punch and shave biopsies, use of local anesthesia with mild sedation helps assure relatively pain-free procedures.
