Benign Ovarian Cyst

Preventing Benign Ovarian Cyst

For women who are not planning to become pregnant, prevention could be as simple as taking birth control pills or other hormone medications that prevent follicles from forming. Medications that make ovulation less frequent reduce a woman’s chances of developing ovarian cysts.

Some foods are also thought to contribute to ovarian cysts, specifically foods high in carbohydrates or estrogen. Abstaining from alcohol and caffeine, reducing sugars and increasing your intake of foods rich in vitamin A and carotenoids (e.g., carrots and salad greens) may help reduce cyst-related pain. In addition, essential fatty acids found in fatty fish such as trout and salmon may help promote hormonal balance, which may be beneficial in alleviating ovarian cysts.
