Coronary artery disease (atherosclerosis) occurs when waxy plaque and fatty deposits attach to the walls of arteries in the heart, blocking the flow of blood and oxygen. An atherectomy is a procedure performed to remove plaque. During this minimally invasive procedure, a catheter – a small, thin, flexible tube – is inserted into the coronary artery through an artery in the groin. Specially designed equipment is then inserted through the catheter and is used to shave or scrape plaque off the artery wall. This equipment can include a rotating shaver or a laser shaver.
