Risk Factors for Anal Cancer

The cause of anal cancer is not yet known, though certain diseases and lifestyle habits put some people at greater risk for developing a malignancy. The known risk factors for anal cancer include:

  • Smoking
  • Receiving immunosuppressant drugs
  • Being over the age of 50
  • Having receptive anal intercourse
  • Having multiple sexual partners
  • Having HPV infection
  • Having HIV infection
  • Having cervical dysplasia or cervical cancer
  • Low CD4 count (cells that are part of the immune system)
