Side Effects of Allergy Testing
The common side effects of allergy testing are skin rash or irritation, itching, stuffy nose and red watery eyes. It is not recommended to test food allergies with an intradermal test because the allergic reaction may be too severe and dangerous. A serious allergic reaction can result if the patient undergoes a skin test for any drug allergies beyond penicillin and related medications.
Allergists and a health care provider will be present in the allergy testing. If anaphylaxis occurs, though rare in allergy testing, a health care provider and other medical professionals will be ready to respond accordingly to this potentially life-threatening condition.
ENT specialists at Florida Hospital are trained to treat any side effects that may develop in the allergy testing or as a result of a particular allergen or multiple substances.
