Doctors categorize the severity of adrenal tumors using the stages of adrenal cancer. These stages show the extent to which the cancer has affected the body. Using these stages, doctors are able to determine the best treatment and help patients understand the prognosis.
Most stages of cancer are similar, but the specifics are different depending on the type of cancer. This is the same with the different types of adrenal cancer.
Generally, these are the stages of adrenal cancer:
- Stage 1 – The tumor is only in one area and the whole tumor can be removed through surgery
- Stage 2 – The tumor is only in one area, but can’t be fully removed through surgery, or the tumor has spread to the lymph nodes
- Stage 3 – Tumor has spread to the lymph nodes and possibly other nearby tissues in the body
- Stage 4 – Tumor has spread to the lymph nodes and to farther tissues in the body
