Acoustic Neuroma

Preventing Acoustic Neuroma

Preventing acoustic neuroma (vestibular schwannoma) is not possible due to the nature of the condition. Many cases relate to a patient having neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2), a hereditary genetic disorder. Because a child of a parent with NF 2 has a 50 percent chance of having the condition, avoiding conception is the only means of preventing acoustic neuroma related to NF 2 in future generations.

Doctors suspect environmental factors of being at the root of the genetic malfunction that occurs in cases of unilateral acoustic neuroma. However, no specific factors have yet been identified.
