| In
developing the innovative design of the expansion projects, Florida Hospital administration
sought consultation from national experts in a variety of fields. This group of
experts included an environmental psychologist, hotel/resort architects, and health
care designers. By incorporating evidence-based design along with the feedback
from these experts, Florida Hospital will be delivering more patient-centered
care. By creating this total healing atmosphere, patients will be able to spend
their energy fighting the disease with the help of the surroundings.
Comments
and suggestions will be welcomed throughout the design process. Employees are
encouraged to suggest how the proposed building can be more user friendly by sending
their comments through the Florida Hospital website. Eight
design drivers have been developed to steer this project. Every structure must
meet each of these standards. One of these design drivers is focused on reducing
employee walking time and improving efficiency. Other drivers emphasize an architectural
design that reduces stress, replenishes spirit and is visually appealing. This
particular commitment influenced the decision to build on the lake rather than
on the train tracks. "New
research indicates the use of nature not only leads to stress reduction, but also
a reduction in pain," said Dr. Roger Ulrich, environmental psychologist.
"Nature pleasantly distracts people temporarily from an internal focus of
their thoughts." Florida
Hospital is also looking to the hospitality industry for input. Hospitality strives
to create moments that enhance the guest experience. Florida Hospital is following
this model to create memorable experiences for our patients and their families.
"In a health care setting this might include the placement of courtyards
or gardens and the organization of corridors in public areas. This allows for
daylight and views which simplify wayfinding," said Debra Lemons, hospitality
architect.
