Partnering to heal children and provide hope
Did you know there are over 3,600 new cases of cleft lip and/or palate in Mexico each year? Babies born with this condition face life-ling challenges unless he or she has reconstructive surgery. Sadly, many families living in poverty stricken communities cannot afford the necessary surgery and care. In 1994, Florida Hospital organized SHARES medical mission trips "to deliver hope through quality healthcare, education, and training." Each year, some of Florida Hospital's best professionals (both medical and non-medical) generously give of their time and talents so that approximately 250 children a year can receive life-changing cleft lip/palate surgery. SHARES also provides basic medical care and cervical cancer screening to rural communities in Mexico because cervical cancer is one of the top causes of preventable death for women there. Other teams travel to Kingston, Jamaica where speech and language pathologists work with developmentally disabled children. Each of these trips impact both the communities visited and the volunteers participating in life-changing ways. This is all possible in part because of employees who give to SHARES through the 1908 Society. If you are interested in going on a trip, contact Eylin Ramos at 407-303-5600 ext. 6496 or eylin.ramos@flhosp.org.
