Raising Awareness for Esophageal Cancer

POSTED BY: Leslie Bradley

Two years ago, Pam Sain had to deal with the difficult tragedy of losing her father to esophageal cancer.  Since then, she has made it her personal mission is to bring awareness of this silent killer to the Central Florida community. Pam’s only connection to the disease is not the loss of her father though. Shortly after, Pam was diagnosed with Barrett’s Esophagus, a pre-cancerous condition caused by bad, continual acid reflux. Pam is passionate about ensuring the community understands that a condition that seems as simple as acid reflux could actually be silently taking the years off of your life.

She’s at it again this year with her 2nd Annual Taste of Pointe Orlando fundraiser, partnered with Florida Hospital and Pointe Orlando, to raise funds and educate people about the symptoms and seriousness of esophageal health. Last year, Mayor Buddy Dyer participated by declaring April as Esophageal Cancer Awareness Month, raising more than $30,000 for the Florida Hospital Cancer Institute.

So here are the facts:
  • Little information exists about esophageal cancer, and its signs and symptoms are often mistaken as just acid reflux and heartburn.
  • 33 percent of people in the United States suffer from acid reflux. It is important to discuss any symptoms regarding reflux, heartburn, trouble swallowing or a persistent cough with your physician.
  • Barrett’s Esophagus is pre-cancerous condition that is one of the leading causes of esophageal cancer.
  • People often self-medicate instead of seeing a physician by taking over-the-counter antacids to battle their acid reflux.
  • For most, esophageal cancer is diagnosed at the end stages, once Barrett’s Esophagus or acid reflux has taken its toll.

Pam Sain’s desire to educate the community grows each year as the numbers rise for esophageal cancer.  Learn more about esophageal cancer.
