"Get Amped" For Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month

It’s not every day you have a colorectal surgeon, neurologist and surgical nurse that plays in a classic rock band. But that is exactly who you will see in the band “Room 2” which was named after an endoscopy suite at Winter Park Memorial Hospital, a Florida Hospital.
In recognition of National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, Room 2 held a “Get Amped for the Cause” concert for all hospital employees. Employees not only got to enjoy live music from the 80s and 90s but they also had the opportunity to become aware of the second most preventable type of cancer, colon cancer.
As a colorectal surgeon, Dr. Sam Atallah, knows that sometimes talking about getting a colonoscopy can be an uncomfortable topic to discuss which is why, with guitar in hand, finding an alternative approach to the subject is imperative.
“It was important to have a concert because it helps make the topic more fun to people,” said Dr. Atallah. “This is a way to get everyone engaged and to talk about it. The best advice I could give anyone would be to get screened!”
And although being in a band and being a surgeon differ greatly, Dr. Atallah states they do have something in common, “both are all about teamwork!”
