Your physician
will give you specific preparation instructions prior to your
procedure. The following outlines various procedures and what
you can expect for comfort and medications.
- Upper
Gastrointestinal (G.I.) Endoscopy - Used to diagnose
problems like ulcers, foreign objects or tumors. A long
flexible tube or endoscope is passed through the mouth to
the esophagus, stomach or small intestine for direct viewing.
Preparation: Your throat may be anesthetized with
spray or gargle and intravenous sedation will be given.
- Lower
G.I. Endoscopy - Used to examine the entire colon or
rectum and sigmoid colon. A flexible tube with a mechanism
for direct, clear visualization of tissue passed through
the rectum into the lower G.I. tract for direct observation.
Preparation: Colonoscopy usually requires intravenous
sedation. Sedation or pain medication is generally not required
for sigmoidoscopy.
- Bronchoscopy-
Used to gather specimens, diagnose tumors and study or remove
foreign objects in the lungs. Bronchoscopy is a painless,
direct examination of your air passages. During this procedure,
a flexible tube ( a bronchoscope) is used to enter your
air passages and lungs through your nose, past the vocal
chords, and into the trachea and bronchi.
Preparation: You may receive intravenous sedation
or local anesthesia.
